Have Sword, Will Travel (HSWT) is a very unique and funny action-packed adventure series through time. Coming out of retirement Col. Hawk leads his Starcom companions against the evil forces which seek to use the time travel technology for their own financial and greedy means. These are his adventures.
Filmed entirely with one camera, this award-winning
web series brings you back to when television was in its infancy. Old school so to speak. Every episode is filmed with its own style of that particular era in time. For example, episodes set in the 1800's -1950's are shot in black & white or sepia - to not only give it a look but a feel. A variety of actors from all over the world star in HSWT such as Enrico Ganino (Italy), Kei Hirayama (Japan), Shi Yan Hui (China), Vernon Wells (Australia), Thomas McKenna (Great Britan). Myself, as well as Donny Williamson, Daniel D. Houy, Chuck Paxton, and Terrie Helie all reside in Los Angeles.
Where did the idea/concept for your web series come from?
In 1989 I was the lead singer for a successful rock band and avid sword practitioner. Through my many experiences with the "Hollywood elite", I was introduced to a gentleman named "John" through a prominent entertainment attorney. After having this man and attorney over to my house on several occasions as my guest, the conversations over time became very interesting at the least. Soon after HSWT was airing as a Public Access show and that is where I developed the character of Col. Hawk who mirrored, and let's say lived the adventures of this man named John. My character on the show, Col. Hawk is a time traveler from the future that returns to the present time and various times in the past on missions for the military.
Back in 2000, a man named "John Titor" started to communicate with people online, describing himself as a time traveler from the future and that he was sent back in time on mission for the military. The story of JT became an internet phenomenon. Coincidence? Or reality? My concept seems to have a real controversy surrounding it. Is this internet mystery man John Titor for real? Did I really meet this man? Or am I this man? I have always wanted to travel through time as we all have fantasies about.
Combining other elements from shows from the past such as Gilligan's Island, Wild Wild West, The Mummy, Back to the Future, etc., I have created a very unique and controversial concept. It's ready to be developed for network TV, 3-D or the big screen. The stories and possibilities are endless!
Name some of your sci-fi influences. Any favorite movies, TV shows, novels?
I love to read all kinds of books on physics and string theory, Plato, Lao Tse, history, etc. Einstein is a hero, as well as many others. Michael Crichton was awesome and his novel Timeline would have to be one of my favorites. Also Whitley Strieber's Communion. I am fascinated with Edgar Cayce The Sleeping Prophet, Jules Verne and other visionaries. I grew up with Star Trek, Roy Rogers, Gilligan, and the Skipper, Wild Wild West was a favorite, Batman and The Green Hornet too. But I have to mention my all time favorites: Some Like it Hot, The Great Race, and Elvis in Tickle Me. I also have to mention the spectacular job done in a little known movie favorite of mine called Kingdom of Heaven by Ridley Scott, to whom I have had the honor of working with. I never dislike any movie or any book!
Tell us about the technical production of your show. What 
camera & equipment did you use? Editing software & hardware? For visual effects, etc?
The production of our show is very simple. We use only one camera an XL1. Great camera and it really takes a beating. I use a shotgun mic and boom. We don't use many lights just natural lighting and we don't use anything or anyone else. We don't use a crew. I basically do everything because we save time and in doing so we can produce more episodes. The benefit of doing more episodes is that we can grow faster improving along the way and tell more of our stories. We can produce episodes 3x a month as opposed to one episode a month. I also save money. My main peeve is waiting for everyone. By doing it my way by myself I can guarantee it will get done without having to wait for a bunch of crew to stop eating all the donuts! I edit the show using Avid. A very good system. It helps me keep the show looking like it was made in the 60's. Old school, not filled with a million special effects tricks. I do use green screen because finding a castle in Burbank is sometimes hard to do. I make all the costumes by hand and I have a leather shop at my house where the wardrobe is created, along with the weapons, props, and sets. I own four horses that can be seen on the show and they rock! The music we use on the show comes from a variety of prominent recording artists from all over the world such as Vixen, Maxine Petrucci, Poison Dollys, LoveBone, Terry Hellie, and many others. .
Can you tell us any interesting facts or trivia about your show? Any funny stories?
When hearing the title Have Sword,Will Travel one might say to themselves "Oh no, another sword show!". But I wanted to tell stories where the word "sword" stands for "The Sword Of Justice". We have the privilege of working with screen legend Vernon Wells from Road Warrior. Mr. Wells even directed a few episodes with us and still joins us from time to time (No pun intended!). We also have been working with Master Shi Yan hui from the American Shaolin Academy, a 
34th generation Shaolin Master from China. We were happy to have him join the show as Starcom Agent Woo, who is often coming to Col. Hawk's rescue. The fights to be aired in upcoming episodes are extremely difficult to choreograph, but with the talent that has joined the show recently, we will surely amaze.
The best times we have are when we are filming. The laughter never stops. Donny Williamson (Jadad) and Dan Houy (Panama Red) keep us all in stitches, but Chuck Paxton (Dr. Ocularis) is really out there. I have been asked if the good Doctor really injected me with the Pharoh 200--his mind control experiment made with THC--and I always laugh because it was really foam rubber pressed inside of a prop syringe. It looked so real but it was just movie magic.
Italian actor Enrico Ganino who plays bad guy "Rheeko" is the glue that holds the show together, not only with his great comedic acting abilities, but also by being assistant producer, cameraman, driver, stuntman, swordsman, friend, and even prop builder when needed. I count on his abilities a lot and he never lets me or the cast down.
Mostly everything we use is made from cardboard or some unknown element. One time one of the characters on the show tried to test my wardrobe expertise and gave me a window shade from a car and said "What can you do with this?". I laughed and within four hours I made a complete suit of scaled armor and a Spartan Helmet! The fun never stops and the adventure seems to have just begun. HSWT gives all who participate a reason to get up in the morning. I respect and admire everyone that has joined the family and worked so hard in crazy conditions--rain, over 100 degree heat, wind, and mud some times up to 14 hours a day only to come back the next day to do it all over again for no pay and little or no recognition from their peers. We are all lucky just to be able to share a donut that is if we can afford it! Some have cried and some have missed important functions in their lives, but to bring just one moment of joy and entertainment to the audience is all they ever ask in return. Without the hard work and dedication of the cast and family members support, HSWT would not be here to enjoy. I love them all! Come with us now on an adventure you will never forget!
